How to Calculate SGPA from Credits and Grades

Last updated: June 2025 · 5 min read

What is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It represents your academic performance in a single semester, calculated as a weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects.

SGPA is used by most Indian universities that follow the credit-based grading system recommended by UGC and AICTE.

SGPA Formula

SGPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) / Σ(Credits)

Where:

  • Credit — the number of credit hours assigned to each subject
  • Grade Point — the numerical value corresponding to the letter grade earned
  • Σ — the summation across all subjects in the semester

A 8 A (Very Good)
B+ 7 B+ (Good)
B 6 B (Above Average)
C 5 C (Average)
P 4 P (Pass)
F 0 F (Fail)
