How to Calculate SGPA from Credits and Grades
Last updated: June 2025 · 5 min read
What is SGPA?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It represents your academic performance in a single semester, calculated as a weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects.
SGPA is used by most Indian universities that follow the credit-based grading system recommended by UGC and AICTE.
SGPA Formula
SGPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) / Σ(Credits)
Where:
- Credit — the number of credit hours assigned to each subject
- Grade Point — the numerical value corresponding to the letter grade earned
- Σ — the summation across all subjects in the semester
Grade Point Mapping (10-Point Scale)
| Grade | Grade Point | Description |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | O (Outstanding) |
| A+ | 9 | A+ (Excellent) |
| A | 8 | A (Very Good) |
| B+ | 7 | B+ (Good) |
| B | 6 | B (Above Average) |
| C | 5 | C (Average) |
| P | 4 | P (Pass) |
| F | 0 | F (Fail) |
Step-by-Step Example
Consider a semester with 5 subjects:
| Subject | Credits | Grade | GP | Credit × GP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Physics | 4 | A | 8 | 32 |
| Chemistry | 3 | O | 10 | 30 |
| English | 2 | A+ | 9 | 18 |
| Workshop | 2 | B+ | 7 | 14 |
| Total | 15 | 130 | ||
SGPA = 130 / 15 = 8.67
