How to Convert SGPA to CGPA
Last updated: June 2025 · 5 min read
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your score for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average across all semesters. Here's how to convert your individual SGPAs into a cumulative CGPA.
Method 1: Equal-Weight (Simple Average)
Use this when all semesters have roughly the same number of credits:
Example
SGPAs: 8.2, 8.5, 8.8, 8.6 (4 semesters)
CGPA = (8.2 + 8.5 + 8.8 + 8.6) / 4 = 8.525
Method 2: Credit-Weighted Average
Use this for a more accurate result when semesters have different credit loads:
Example
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sem 1 | 8.2 | 22 | 180.4 |
| Sem 2 | 8.5 | 24 | 204.0 |
| Sem 3 | 8.8 | 20 | 176.0 |
| Sem 4 | 8.6 | 22 | 189.2 |
| Total | 88 | 749.6 |
CGPA = 749.6 / 88 = 8.52
Which Method Should I Use?
- Equal-weight: Quick and easy. Good approximation if all semesters have 20–24 credits.
- Credit-weighted: More accurate. Essential if semesters vary a lot in credits (e.g., 15 vs 28).

CGPA is the cumulative average of all your semester SGPAs. If all semesters have equal credits: CGPA = (Sum of all SGPAs) / (Number of semesters). With different credit loads: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits) / Σ(Credits).
Add up all your semester SGPAs and divide by the number of semesters (equal-weight method), or multiply each SGPA by its semester credits and divide by total credits (weighted method). Use our free CGPA Calculator at cgpapath.com/tools/cgpa-calculator.
Yes. If you don't know your exact credits, use the equal-weight method which simply averages all your SGPAs. This is a good approximation when semesters have similar credit loads.
