How to Convert CGPA to GPA (4-Point Scale)
Last updated: June 2025 · 5 min read
If you're an Indian student applying to universities abroad, you may need to convert your 10-point CGPA to the 4-point GPA scale used in the US, Canada, and other countries. Here's what you need to know.
Approximate Conversion Formula
⚠️ Important: This is only a rough approximation. There is no officially standardized conversion between the Indian 10-point scale and the US 4-point GPA scale. Different universities may interpret your CGPA differently.
Conversion Table
| CGPA (10-point) | GPA (4-point) | US Letter Grade |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 4.0 | A+ |
| 9.0 – 9.9 | 3.6 – 4.0 | A / A+ |
| 8.0 – 8.9 | 3.2 – 3.6 | A- / B+ |
| 7.0 – 7.9 | 2.8 – 3.2 | B / B+ |
| 6.0 – 6.9 | 2.4 – 2.8 | B- / C+ |
| 5.0 – 5.9 | 2.0 – 2.4 | C / C+ |
Better Alternatives to a Simple Formula
Instead of using a rough formula, consider these options:
- WES (World Education Services): Many US and Canadian universities accept WES-evaluated transcripts. WES converts your Indian grades to a US-equivalent GPA.
- University-specific evaluation: Many universities have their own internal systems for evaluating international transcripts. Check the admissions page.
- Percentage conversion: Some universities prefer percentage scores. You can use Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 and submit that instead.

There is no universal formula. The most common approximation is: GPA (4.0) ≈ (CGPA / 10) × 4. For example, 8.5 CGPA ≈ 3.4 GPA. However, many foreign universities evaluate Indian transcripts using their own internal systems rather than a simple formula.
Many universities accept the CGPA on your transcript as-is and evaluate it in context. Some may use WES (World Education Services) or their own conversion. It's best to check each university's admissions requirements.
