SGPA — Semester Grade Point Average

SGPA measures your performance in a single semester. It is calculated by taking the weighted average of grade points across all subjects in that semester, weighted by their credit hours.

Think of SGPA as your "score" for one semester. It can go up or down each semester independently.

CGPA — Cumulative Grade Point Average

CGPA is the cumulative weighted average of all your SGPAs from the first semester to the current semester. It represents your overall academic performance throughout your degree.

CGPA is what appears on your final degree certificate and is used by companies during placements and by universities for higher studies admissions.

Why Does CGPA Matter More?

  • Placements: Most companies have a CGPA cutoff (usually 7.0 or 7.5)
  • Higher studies: Universities look at cumulative CGPA for admissions
  • Scholarships: Many scholarships require a minimum CGPA
  • Final degree: CGPA appears on your degree certificate
